Aggro (from term Aggravation or Aggression), in MMORPGs, expresses the aggressive intent of a Mob or NPC. Aggro represents your threat level to a monster, and it can change often during battle.

Gaining Aggro[]

Aggro can be generated by walking up to a monster, attacking a monster and using skills. Keep in mind that healing skills can generate aggro, so use them sparingly.

In TERA, monsters usually attack the character who has the highest threat level, or most aggro. When encountering a monster, whoever it sees or is attacked by first will automatically have aggro. Therefore, it is important that the tank is at the head of group and the first to attack, ensuring they always have aggro.

In dungeons, the character with the highest aggro from the boss will have a red ring under their feet. Some boss monsters will randomly select a player to attack with a special skill, regardless of their aggro. This is called secondary aggro and it's usually indicated with blue ring when attack happens.

Keeping Aggro[]

For more information see: Tank

In most cases, the Tank should have the highest aggro from the monsters. Tanks have high endurance and defense, enabling them to take more damage from monsters than other classes. Tanks also have skills designed for keeping aggro, such as Challenging Shout, Provoke and Torrent of Blows.

Offensive and Support classes should be wary of having a higher threat level than the tank. If this happens, the tank could lose aggro, allowing monsters to attack other players and kill them far easier and quicker than the tank can be killed.

Losing Aggro[]

If you ever gain unwanted aggro, some classes have a skill that drops your threat level to zero, allowing you to lose aggro. Archers have Feign Death, Sorcerers have Stone Skin, and Priests have Prayer of Peace. Warriors can summon a shadow with Smoke Aggressor, which will temporarily take the players aggro for them.

If you lack a skill to lose aggro, you can usually lose aggro from a monster by running far enough from their spawn point, which forces them to stop chasing you and run back. If you need to lose aggro from a monster, but do not want to run, you should stop attacking and allow someone else, like the tank, to attack the monster and gain aggro.

Examples of Use[]

  • Tanks might say, "Don't attack yet. Let me get aggro first."
  • A Priest could say, "Help, I have aggro! Get them off me!"
  • Someone might warn you, "Don't aggro the boss yet."
  • Your friend could say, "Did you aggro half the map again?"
